Okay, so you’re going to pop the big question; but, rather than ruin the surprise of her life, you want to out-and-out blow her away with a perfect ring she’ll love forever (which fits perfectly when you’re down on bended knee…!)
You undoubtedly know her bra size and you have an idea on her dress size, but goodness, how would you know her ring size?
Getting an ill-fitting ring would be uncomfortable for you and for her. Not least for the lack of perfectly posed ring-selfie after your heroic moment, slipping on the ring you’ve put so much time, effort and money into choosing.
Don’t panic, all is not lost! Follow our 6 tips below on how to get her ring size and find your winning strategy.
1. Go decoy ‘promise’ ring shopping with her.
Take her to buy a promise ring. It doesn’t have to be expensive – it could be a simple silver ring as a symbol of your love, this is a touching gesture which won’t ruin the surprise of your impending proposal. Valentines, a birthday or an anniversary are all great moments to do this. Make sure it’s fit to her 4th finger though!
2. Sneak an IPhone pic of her left hand and show it to a jeweller or ring consultant.
This is savvy. Like a French atelier, if he or she is good, experience allows the pro to be able to estimate to a size or two away. Jewellers know the ‘wider at the knuckle dilemma’ too, and in any case, they will help you by suggesting getting it slightly bigger (rather than going by your rogue DIY measuring skills) so it’s guaranteed to go on at that special moment! She can then get it tailored down to a flawless fit afterwards.
3. Measure one of her rings, and mark on your finger
If she has a ring that she already wears on her 4th finger – take that and try it on your pinky. Mark where the ring starts – and – finishes on your finger and take yourself to a jeweler to get measured.
TIP: The actual size is in the middle of the width of the ring. This is important. If you only mark the end point – it could be much too big, the front, too small – so mark start to finish and the middle will be her actual size.
4. Find an excuse to get her rings cleaned
You could easily play the heroic card here. Perhaps your watch needs polishing and you offer to take her jewellery too. This won’t cost much – a jeweler should charge around £20 for her ring polishing service. What an amazing boyfriend you are indeed!
5. Take a sneaky Mould with wax or soap
Grab a bar of soap, the hotel mini bars are the perfect size, and push the ring down into the soap to get an imprint. If you’re being really slick, order some jewellers ‘wax block green slice’ off amazon and imprint the ring here. A jeweller can then perfectly extract the imprint sizing.
6. Playfully have her try on one of her friends Engagement Rings over drinks or dinner.
If one of your partner’s friends is engaged, ask her friend to let your girlfriend try on the ring. This will put you in a ballpark size range to start out with. You can also use this as an opportunity to ask what she thought of her friend’s ring (in private) and try to do a little sleuthing as to what style of ring she would like for herself.
