Her designs have been touted as some of the most glamourous and dramatic bridal fashion on the runway and her latest collection may be my favourite to date. Pnina Tornai, is a favourite among Brides around the world and it’s easy to understand why. Her couture creations include the elegant and timeless princess ballgown to fashion-forward silhouettes for the most daring and advantageous Bride.
I have to admit that I was a bit star-struck and nervous for our meeting, but she is as lovely and approachable in person as her many appearances on “Say Yes to the Dress”. The gorgeous Kleinfeld at Hudson Bay was showcasing her collection and the Brides were all a buzz with her being there. There is something magical about the beautiful sea of white gowns delicately hanging and their creator among them that you appreciate their beauty that much more.
Just off the runway of New York’s famed Bridal Fashion Week, Pnina shared with me her inspiration for this latest collection. While enjoying the beautiful beaches of Thailand during a time of spiritual reflection, she noted the fluidity and movement of the water and the sun glistening on the current. It was then that she decided that her new collection would capture these elements and titled it suitable “Wind Upon Water”. This collection encompasses many of Pnina’s trademark elements including her intricate hand-embroidered bodice and crystal embellishes but the addition of ruffles emulating waves and lace mimicking coral transform her hallmark couture designs.
When deciding on a venue to shoot the collection, Pnina said she “chose the desert where water is most needed”. It was an adventurous photo shoot that included a melting generator (from the extreme heat), no air conditioning and a camel ride or two but the outcome is breathtaking. One of my favourite designs from this collection was inspired by a Kaftan and has a beautiful airiness to it but with Pnina’s trademark intricate detail.
When I asked how she would top this year’s designs, she said she has a “noticeable sadness” after each show because she knows she will have to exceed this year’s expectations and wonders where she will draw her next inspirations from.
So many Brides are drawn to Pnina’s designs and she’s committed to making every Bride happy by customizing a gown to their meet their vision. Pnina characterizes her Brides as those that have a keen attention to detail and appreciate that every gown is individually made (not mass produced) with quality and great care. These Brides are beautifully feminine, confident and sensual but not provocative. She applauds a Brides self-assurance, but her advice is to be careful with the limits of sexiness and to be romantic and respectful of the wedding ceremony.
Pnina’s talents off the runway are just as noteworthy as her fashion successes. She has a passion for cooking and placed 2nd on MasterChef: Celebrity Edition and her love of travel inspire a lot of her dishes.
I can’t say enough about my time spent with Pnina Tornai and I’m so appreciative of the time she gave me to share her passion. I certainly can’t wait to see where she will draw inspiration for the next collection.
