Unique. Proudly elegant.
Claire Pettibone’s Fall/Winter 2015 collection Gothic Angel glides into bridal salons with colours, silhouettes, and details that fuse vintage and whimsy, traditional values with personal style.
For Pettibone, the inspiration came from a series of love, all of which symbolize opulence and care.
“When I was a child, my parents bought a house in upstate New York and the previous owner had lived her whole life there and passed. When we got the house there were photos left, and actual 1920s beaded dresses and purses… I was just so struck by the idea of a life in another time…all that detail, hand beading and intricacy really made an impression, and I have a true love of costume history and things made with such care and detail that I try to bring that feeling into my work now. (For the collection) it started with the stained glass windows. I had taken a trip to London over the holiday before and was in Westminster Abbey, and everywhere you look there’s embellishment in the architecture. Not a plain surface in sight – it’s so elegant. I like the idea of playing with that – how can I create a dress that has a ton of detail and intricacy but doesn’t feel overwhelming” Claire explains.
Cue the pieces with elements that include shift silhouettes with floral brocading, drop waists and fringe, three-quarter sleeves and plunging necklines. The key, Pettibone said, is to manage the spectrum in order for pieces to stay unique without pigeon-holing them to a specific look.
“I think we live in the time that we live in- we’re influenced by that no matter what. But I feel with the wedding gown it does have a little timelessness about it. So I like to mix things up where it’s a little bit the 20s, and a little bit Victorian and a little bit of modern sexy, so it’s kind of a mashup that makes it more unique yet not too costume. It still looks fresh.” Claire says.
More importantly, her dresses are for the bride who prefers to show less, not more.
“I feel there is a trend in bridal now to wear very, very sexy dresses, and personally, I feel there is a line. I’m all for a sexy bride, but your grandparents will be there and it is after all still a wedding,” Pettibone said.
